Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sánchez

Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sánchez alias El Coss (born August 1, 1971 in Matamoros , Mexico ) is a suspected Mexican criminal and leader of the Gulf cartel .

Criminal career

Costilla was a police officer before he was recruited for the Gulf Cartel by Osiel Cardenas in the late 1990s . In 1999 he was alleged to have been involved in an incident in which several members of the Gulf cartel, led by Osiel Cardenas, threatened an FBI and DEA agent with death. Since 2002 he has been wanted by the United States for this crime as well as drug smuggling and money laundering.

After the arrest of Osiel Cardenas in 2003, he was considered one of the leaders of the Gulf cartel. In 2010, after the killing of Ezequiel Cárdenas Guillén and the splitting off of Los Zetas , he took over one of the two remaining factions of the Gulf cartel.

Arrest and extradition to the United States

The United States and Mexico had offered a total of $ 7.3 million for his arrest. Costilla was on the Mexican wanted list of the 37 most wanted drug lords . On September 12, 2012, he was arrested without resistance by Mexican marines in the port city of Tampico .

On September 30, 2015, the Mexican government extradited him to the USA along with 12 other criminals at the request of a US court. He is charged with importing and distributing cocaine and marijuana, money laundering and threatening US investigative authorities in the United States.
