General Fructuoso Rivera

José Fructuoso Rivera y Toscana (born October 17, 1784 in Montevideo , † January 13, 1854 in Melo ) was a Uruguayan general and politician.

Life

He fought the Brazilians and eventually drove them out. In 1823 he was made Knight of the Imperial Order of the Cross and in the same year Brigadier General. From August 28, 1829 to April 30, 1830 he held the position of Minister of Defense of Uruguay. From November 6, 1830 to October 24, 1834 he was the first president of Uruguay . He was also the founder of the Partido Colorado . In 1839 he was elected president for the second time and held this office until 1843. He was also part of the triumvirate that provisionally ruled Uruguay from 1853 to 1854.
