José Luís Champalimaud

José Luís Antunes Feio Terenas Champalimaud (born September 15, 1939 in Nova Lisboa , † November 26, 1996 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese doctor and researcher.

After completing his medical degree, Champalimaud worked in the hospital service. Study trips and missions to fight epidemics have taken him to Africa several times.

In 1986, in the clinical observation of several patients from Guinea-Bissau with clinical signs of chronic diarrhea, he succeeded in isolating the second type of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-2).

In addition to his academic work, Champalimaud took an active part in university life and was elected to the Senate of the University of Lisbon in March 1991 .

In 2005, the Largo José Luís Champalimaud was named after him in the Portuguese capital .
