The Hof-Apotheke in Karlsruhe is the most famous work of the architect Hermann Billing in Karlsruhe.

history

The grand-ducal personal pharmacy was established in Karlsruhe Palace in 1718 , moved to the city in 1833 and converted into a public pharmacy. In 1901 the pharmacist Friedrich Stroebe had the existing building erected in the acute angle between the current main pedestrian zone Kaiserstraße and Waldstraße.

The building shows the combination of massive monumentality, variable structure and filigree details that is typical for Billings Art Nouveau buildings. The facade including the figures is made of red sandstone with accentuated joints. The ornaments are gilded, originally they were partially painted green.

The building sculpture on the house comes from Fridolin Dietsche .
