José Luís Monteiro (born October 25, 1848 in Lisbon ; † January 27, 1942 there ) was an important Portuguese architect of the 19th century . One of his most famous works is the Rossio train station in Lisbon.

Life

José Luís Monteiro was born on October 25, 1848 in the municipality of São José in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, but he received most of his education in Paris .

From 1880 in the following years, Monteiro was an employed architect of the Lisbon city administration and designed numerous buildings in this context. His most famous work is the Rossio train station (1886/87) in the Manueline style. Among other things, he designed the Hotel Avenida Palace (1892), which is next to the train station, as well as the Salão Portugal da Sociedade de Geografia and the Igreja dos Anjos church (1889). Monteiro not only designed buildings in Lisbon, he was also assigned the Biester chalet in Sintra and the Faial house in Cascais and a collaboration on the Palmela house in Estoril together with the architects Thomas Henry Wyatt , Cesar Ianz and José António Gaspar .

He died on January 27, 1942 at his birthplace in Campo de Ourique .
