José Luis Herrera (born June 21, 1949 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ; † September 27, 2005 ibid), also known by the nickname El Pillo , was a Mexican football player who mainly played in defensive midfield .

career

Herrera began his career at the age of ten in the youth department of his home club Atlas Guadalajara . At the age of 17, he also received his first professional contract there and was used for the first time for the first team a year later.

In 1971 he suffered relegation to the second division with Atlas , but managed to get promoted again immediately. In 1976 "El Pillo" moved to league rivals UANL Tigres , with whom he won the Mexican football championship in the 1977/78 season. In 1980 he returned to Club Atlas and ended an active career there.

Even after his playing career, he remained connected to a long-term club Atlas and worked as a coach in its youth division.

The two-time Mexican international died at the age of 56 in his hometown of cancer .
