His family were farmers, but they quickly realized that José was interested in art. She sent him to a painting school at the Catholic working school Círculo Católico de Obreros de Murcia, where he was taught drawing and painting by the well-known José María Sobejano López (1852-1918). His interest in sculpture began very early, inspired by traditional nativity scenes from the Huerta de Murcia, he began to model his first clay figures.

In 1912 he joined the “Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos” academy in Valencia , while still serving in the army , and his work began with the financial support of Juan de la Cierva . In 1920 and 1924 he was awarded the gold medal for his works at the national exhibition "Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes". In 1922 he worked at the Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal and soon afterwards in Italy.

In 1933 he returned to Murcia, where he founded the School of Crafts that same year. After the Spanish Civil War he worked almost exclusively on religious pictures and sculptures. In 1943 he received the first prize Premio de la Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes for his work Dolorosa and at the National Exhibition Concurso Nacional de España of 1951 he was awarded for his sculpture of the Reclining Christ. In 1960 he was appointed academician at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid . One of his well-known students was Benjamin Saúl .
