Josef Bechter

Josef Bechter , actually Franz Josef Bechter , (born February 3, 1859 in Doren , † September 16, 1945 in Sulzberg ) was an Austrian politician ( CSP ) and farmer. From 1918 to 1923 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament and mayor of Sulzberg.

education and profession

Bechter attended elementary school in Doren for six years and was already working for an unmarried aunt when he was ten. After that he worked as a servant for a neighbor for twelve years. As a result, he learned the craft of glazing and carpentry and between 1889 and 1891 worked as a poorhouse administrator in Sulzberg. In 1899 he started his own business as a farmer.

Politics and functions

Bechter was a member of the Christian Social Party and belonged to the Vorarlberg state parliament from November 3, 1918. He was a member of the provisional state assembly between 1918 and 1919 and was then a member of the regular state parliament until the end of the legislative period on November 5, 1923. From 1919 he represented the constituency of Bregenz in the state parliament and was a member of the finance committee, the agriculture committee and the tax committee. Bechter was involved in local politics from 1891 to 1904 and from 1907 to 1919 as community leader of Sulzberg.

In addition, Bechter was a member of the fire insurance association for 15 communities in the Bregenz district, where he was chairman from 1891 to 1919. He also worked as a co-founder of the Weissachtal electricity cooperative and temporarily headed the cooperative as chairman. In addition, Bechter was co-founder and dairy cashier of the dairy competition Sulzberg-Dorf and a member of the Sulzberg veterans' association. Bechter was also made an honorary member by the Sulzberg Veterans Association.

Private

Bechter was the son of the farmer Josef Bechter (1811-1856) and his wife Anna Maria Fink (1827-1903). Both his father and his mother were born in Sulzberg, and he himself in the neighboring community of Doren. He married Martha Katharina Blank (1849–1928), who was also from Sulzberg, on June 10, 1884 in Sulzberg and was father of a daughter in 1885 and 1888 and father of a son in 1892.
