Josef Meixner (born April 24, 1908 in Percha (Starnberg) , † March 19, 1994 in Aachen ) was a German theoretical physicist.

Life

Meixner studied mathematics and physics at the University of Munich from 1926 to 1931 , where he passed the state examination for higher subjects in these subjects in April 1931 and received his doctorate in theoretical physics with Arnold Sommerfeld in June 1931 with a thesis on wave mechanics . He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Munich and from 1934 as a research assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Gießen , where he completed his habilitation in 1936 and was given a lectureship in theoretical physics as a private lecturer . After various professorships , including at the Technical University of Berlin , he was appointed by the Reich Ministry for Science, Education and National Education (REM) in Berlin on December 1, 1942 as an adjunct professor for theoretical physics at RWTH Aachen University . In 1948 he was appointed full professor there, where he taught and researched until his retirement in 1974.

Meixner is best known today for the special functions of mathematical physics named after him (Meixner polynomials, Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials) and for his work on spheroid functions and math functions. Among other things, he dealt with the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, where he published important early works in 1943. In the 1950s, at the request of his teacher Sommerfeld and Fritz Bopp, he edited the new editions of Sommerfeld's famous lectures on theoretical physics.

Josef Meixner found his final resting place in Aachen's Westfriedhof .
