Yosef Mendelevitch (or Mendelovitch ) (* 1947 in Riga ) was a Soviet Jew and member of the Refusenik movement who was involved in an attempted plane hijacking in 1970 with which the group wanted to force their emigration. He was imprisoned with the Jewish dissident Natan Sharansky . After his release in 1981 he emigrated to Israel , where he now works as a Zionist rabbi . Mendelevitch wrote an acclaimed autobiography about his life as a "prisoner of Zion".
