Josef Speth (born May 16, 1938 in Kißlegg , Allgäu ) is a German theoretical physicist who deals with many-particle physics and nuclear physics.

resume

Speth studied physics at the TH Stuttgart and TU Munich , where he graduated in 1964 (experimental diploma thesis with Maier-Leibnitz) and received his doctorate with Wolfgang Wild in 1968 ( on the charge distribution of excited levels of ug nuclei ). In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich ( on the theory of finite fermion systems ) and was a university lecturer there until 1972. In 1972 he became a scientific adviser and professor at the University of Bonn and department head at the KFA Jülich. From 1982 to 2003 he was a university professor at the University of Bonn and director of the Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics at Forschungszentrum Jülich , after having been acting director there from 1979. In 2003 he retired in Bonn and Jülich. From 1998 to 2000 he was chairman of the scientific council of FZ Jülich and chairman of the association of scientific councils of the Helmholtz Association.

In 1975 and 1978 he was visiting professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY), 1985–1986 visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and in the spring semester visiting professor at UCLA, 1989 visiting professor (Frankfurt Chair) in Tel Aviv, 1991 “Ablett Fellow” at the University of Johannesburg, March 1994 member of the “Nuclear Physics Review Panal of the DOE” in Washington, 1996 visiting scientist at the University of Adelaide, Australia and visiting scientist at the Jefferson Lab. in Newport News, USA.

He dealt with the structure of atomic nuclei and their collective excitations such as giant resonances taking into account subnuclear degrees of freedom ( mesons , quarks ) within the framework of quantum mechanical many-body theory. Speth published more than 250 papers in scientific journals.
