from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Stoer (born June 21, 1934 in Meschede ) is a German mathematician who deals with numerical mathematics .

Josef Stoer, Oberwolfach 1988

Stoer received his doctorate in 1961 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz under Friedrich L. Bauer ( on two algorithms for interpolation with rational functions ). He is a professor emeritus at the University of Würzburg .

He is particularly concerned with approximation theory , extrapolation methods and optimization methods and is known for textbooks, especially his Numerical Mathematics with Roland Bulirsch , which is based on lectures by Friedrich Bauer and first appeared in 1972/73.

Among other things, he is honorary doctor of the University of Augsburg (2007) and the Technical University of Munich (1997). Stoer is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
