Josef Taurer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Taurer was an Austrian football player from the early days of the sport. He scored both the first goal in the first unofficial game of the Austrian national team in 1901 against Switzerland and the first goal in the team's first official game against Hungary in 1902.

Career

Josef Taurer began his career as a soccer player in 1897 in the street team "Jugendhort", to which the later national players Josef Fischer , Gustav Huber and Johann Studnicka also belonged. Together with Studnicka, he later formed one of the strongest left wing pairs in the early days of football in Austria at the Vienna AC, which Jugendhorst joined in autumn 1897. With the WAC he was able to win all three ÖFU championships for the Tagblatt-Pokal and was soon called up for numerous selection teams. In Austria's first unofficial international match, the Urländer game against Switzerland on April 8, he was used as a left winger and scored the first international goal in a 4-0 win. In Austria's second international match, or the first official one, on October 12, 1902, the WACler was again on the left wing position and again scored the 1-0 - this time against Hungary. Taurer's club colleagues Studnicka and Huber finally made it 5-0. Since Taurer was the only footballer to be on the Austrian national team until his sixth international match, he can also be described as Austria's first record national player. The striker stayed with Vienna AC until 1908 and finally ended his career with the cricket players.

After his active time as an athlete, he was still active as a football referee. In 1922 he became deputy head of the football section of the WAC.
