Josef ibn Abitur

Josef (ibn Jitzchaq) ibn Abitur (* around 900 in Mérida ; † around 970 in Damascus ) was a rabbi , Jewish scholar and one of the first Jewish poets in Spain .

Abitur came from a respected Spanish family from Mérida . His great-great-grandfather was a leading rabbi and city politician.

Josef ibn Abitur moved from Spain to the Orient, where he was an important poet and mediator between Eastern and Western traditions. He wrote Pijjutim and an Arabic translation of the Babylonian Talmud .

He died in Damascus around 970.
