The Joseph Chapel in the hamlet of Marin

The Josefskapelle in Marin is a chapel in the municipality of Virgen in East Tyrol ( Lienz district ).

Building

The Joseph Chapel, which is visible from afar, was built on a slope to the west or slightly below Marin in 1934, consecrated on August 14 of the same year and completed in 1937.

It has a rectangular floor plan with a retracted, height-graded choir and is protected by a steep gable roof over a hollow that is covered with shingles. The roof is surmounted by a wooden roof turret with arched sound openings closed by blinds, the roof turret having a cross-crowned gable roof. The outer walls of the chapel are pierced by two arched windows on the longitudinal walls, on the western entrance side there is a arched portal with a small viewing window and a circular wall opening in the gable field. The outer walls are covered with yellow rough plaster. Inside, the chapel was designed as a two-bay building with a barrel vault, with the vault resting on a flat pilaster structure. While the vault itself was painted with white wall paint and the wall surfaces were painted yellow, the pilasters were accentuated with a light gray. The floor was covered with reddish brick tiles.

Equipment and furnishings

The Josefskapelle has a wooden altar from around 1935. It is framed in brown and gilded with ornamental parts and made up of a pilaster-structured box canteen , a structure with polygonal wall pillars and an offset entablature with a curved extension. The canteen was decorated with a polychrome relief of the holy family with two angels. The altar painting created by Josef Weißkopf in 1920 shows the death of St. Joseph with Christ and Mary in a traditional style in oil on canvas. It is flanked by figures of the apostles Peter (left) and Paul (right). In the excerpt there is a Holy Spirit dove in front of a halo with two flanking angels and a crowning God the Father with a globe.

The ceiling of the chapel is adorned with a ceiling picture that shows the escape from Egypt in bold colors . It was created in 1937 by Carl Rieder from Schwaz. The brightly colored, figural glass paintings in the south wall were probably also created based on his designs. The wooden chairs have curved cheeks, in addition there is a single-door wall cupboard in the chapel, a Way of the Cross consecrated in 1934 made of colored prints in wooden frames, as well as a lecture cross and a figure of Saint Anthony with child or a figure of Saint Joseph (each from the 20th century). In addition, the chapel has an Ecce Homo painting from the second half of the 18th century and two paintings from the 19th century depicting the Sacred Heart and Mary with the Child.
