Josep Hospitaler i Caballer
Josep Hospitaler i Caballer (* in the 18th or 19th century in València ; † 1873 in Maó , Menorca ) was a Catalan scholar and author .
Life
His date of birth and his career before he moved to Menorca are not documented. Josep Hospitaler is named in the historical documents as the founder and director of the first college ( Collegi Maonès ) in Mahon on Menorca, where he taught for several years. After the revolution of 1868 he was a member of the municipal commission for education. He is also the author of the Menorcan dictionary Vocabulario castellano - menorquin , first edition 1869. In 1864 he wrote a Diccionario castellano-menorquin , which was considered a complete dictionary and travel guide for the so-called forasteros (mainland Spaniards ) who traveled to Menorca. From 1858 to 1866 he was director of the daily newspaper Diario de Mallorca and until 1896 he headed the editorial team of Diario de Mahón .
