Joseph Frei

Joseph Frei (born March 16, 1872 in Schötz , Lucerne ; † October 29, 1945 in Sursee ) is a Swiss church musician and composer .

Life

Joseph Frei grew up in Lucerne , where he studied with Franz Joseph Breitenbachs in the Lucerne School of Organists . He completed his professional training at the Conservatory in Cologne. In 1894 he was elected city music director in Sursee and worked there for more than 50 years as a choir director (church choir, male choir), conductor of the orchestra club, organist and music teacher at the city school and the Progymnasium. He also worked as an organ and bell expert.

But he has also made a name for himself as a composer . His work consists mainly of compositions for liturgical use. Joseph Frei died in Sursee on October 29, 1945. His estate is in the music collection of the Zurich Central Library .
