He painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites and mainly dealt with subjects from history and fairy tales, he also painted allegorical and religious subjects. His first painting, Ruth Gleaning , was exhibited by the Royal Scottish Academy in 1844. He has received a number of awards. Two of his most famous works - The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania (1846) and The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania (1847) - are now in the Scottish National Gallery .

In 1850 Paton became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy . In 1858 he married Margaret Furrier. The marriage had seven children. He was raised to the nobility by Queen Victoria in 1867 as a Knight Bachelor . In 1878 he received an LL.D from the University of Edinburgh.

The eldest son, Diarmid Noel Paton (1859-1929), became professor of physiology at the University of Glagow. His second son, Drederick Noel Paton, went to India.

In memoriam

Under the impression of the news of the Indian uprising of 1857 , he exhibited his painting In memoriam at the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy . This shows a group of women who fearfully cling to each other in the face of approaching rebellious sepoys . The reaction of the public to this picture was so violent in view of the news about the siege of Kanpur and the massacre in Bibighar that Joseph Noel Paton withdrew the work and painted over it. The rebellious sepoy was replaced by an approaching Scottish regiment, which suggested a happy ending for the oppressed women to the viewer. The title was also changed by Joseph Noel Paton, renaming it In Memoriam, Henry Havelock , after the British officer who was instrumental in ending the siege of Kanpur.
