Joseph P. Overton

Joseph Paul Overton ( January 4, 1960 - June 30, 2003 ) was an American attorney and Vice President of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy .

He became known as the founder of the idea known as the Overton Window .

Life

Overton received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University and a PhD from Thomas M. Cooley Law School .

He was a member of the State Bar of Michigan and was appointed to the Michigan Appellate Defender Commission by Governor John Engler on the recommendation of the Michigan Supreme Court . Prior to joining the Mackinac Center , Overton held various positions with the Dow Chemical Company including electrical engineer, project manager, and quality specialist.

Overton has studied and promoted free market principles for more than a decade. He traveled a lot and visited Poland, Nicaragua, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Colombia, Malawi, Mozambique, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, India and the People's Republic of China.

He died at the age of 43 of a crash while piloting an ultralight aircraft shortly after taking off from Tuscola Aera Airport near Caro , Michigan.
