Maro Itoje (born October 28, 1994 in Camden , London ) is an English rugby union player . He plays as a second line striker or winger for the England national team , the British and Irish Lions and the Saracens .

childhood and education

Itoje grew up in London as a child of Nigerian parents and attended Harrow School as well as St George's School in Harpenden, Hertfordshire , which specializes in promoting rugby talent. In 2009 he was admitted to the Academy of Saracens. In 2014 he won the world title as captain with England's U20 team.

Career

society

Itoje first played in the 2013/14 season in the English Premiership for the Saracens, for which he is still active today. He won the championship title with the team in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. In 2016, 2017 and 2019 he also won the European Rugby Champions Cup , the highest European club competition. In 2016 he was named Player of the Year in Europe after winning the final over Racing 92 .

National team

Itoje made his national team debut at the Six Nations 2016 against Italy . The team won the Grand Slam at this tournament. The following year he was nominated for the British and Irish Lions and was used in all three games of the Test series against New Zealand . He made his first attempt for the English national team in June 2018 against South Africa . In 2019 he was nominated for the World Cup .

Private life

Itoje's cousin Beno Obano is also a professional rugby player.
