Joseph Wright (oarsman, 1864)

Joseph Walter Harris Wright (born January 14, 1864 in Villanova , † October 28, 1950 in Toronto ) was a Canadian rower .

Joseph Wright rowed for the Argonaut Rowing Club in Toronto. He competed in almost all boat classes and won over 130 Canadian titles and numerous titles in the United States with his crews. At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, he finished second behind the US boat with the Canadian eighth . Four years later, at the Olympic Games in London in 1908 , the British eighth won ahead of the Belgians, while the second British boat and the Canadian eighth took third place. Joseph Wright was the only Canadian rower in 1904 and 1908 in eighth.

In addition to his rowing career, Wright was also active as a boxer, wrestler and track and field athlete. For 18 years he played for the Toronto Argonauts Canadian Football team .

After the 1908 Olympics, Wright ended his active career at the age of 44. He was a coach at his club and supervised the rowers at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years . One of his students was his son Joseph Wright , who won an Olympic silver medal in 1928.
