Josephus Indus (in the Italian text originally Joseph Indiano ; * around 1460, † after 1502), was an Indian Thomas Christian from Kodungallur (= Cranganore) who came to Portugal in 1501 with the Cabral fleet . From there he traveled on to Rome and Venice in 1502 ; Joseph is said to have been around 40 years old at the time. During his stay in Venice, based on his information, an unknown author wrote a regional history report on India and the Thomas Christians , which found its way into the anthology Paesi novamente retrovati and its translations, printed in 1507 .
