Journal Club
In the academic field, a journal club is a meeting of scientists at which current scientific publications are presented and critically discussed. Most of these discussions take place at the working group level and deal with the research topics that are being worked on in the respective group.
term
The term is made up of the English word "journal" for magazine and "club" as a reference to a regular meeting of a certain group of people. The English name has its origin in the fact that scientific literature is published almost exclusively in English. In the scientific environment, only journals are considered as those that go through the so-called peer review process , in which the article (called "paper") only after basic quality assurance and assessment by so-called peers , i. H. renowned scientists in the respective research field are accepted.
Goal setting
The aim of this event is, on the one hand, to find out about current findings in one's own field of work, and, on the other hand, to train critical examination of statistical data and the experiments carried out. Particularly in the training of scientific staff - e.g. B. Diploma and PhD students - this discussion is seen as an elementary skill. The subject of discussion can be whether the conclusions are comprehensible, whether the data given are sufficient and whether the experiments are thus reproducible.
