Parish church hll. Peter and Paul

The Roman Catholic Weidlinger parish church is located in the center of Weidling , a village and cadastral community of the Lower Austrian municipality of Klosterneuburg . It belongs to the Klosterneuburg deanery of the Archdiocese of Vienna and is consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul .

history

Floor plan of the parish church (thicker lines: second and third construction phase)

At the beginning of the 15th century, the Klosterneuburg citizen Andreas Lohner had a chapel built in Weidling, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Katharina was consecrated - from 1614 St. Paul is mentioned as the second church patron instead of Catherine. During the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, the Turks moved via Weidling to Klosterneuburg and devastated the place severely. When the badly damaged church was rebuilt, it was expanded in baroque style at the same time. As part of the Josephine parish regulation , Weidling was raised to an independent parish in 1783.

The sacred building was originally built between 1403 and 1407 as a chapel with a 3-bay nave and an east-facing polygonal apse in the Gothic style . In 1686 there was a two-bay baroque extension in the west. In 1717 a new sacristy was added on the south side - the old north side now serves as a confessional chapel - and the dilapidated tower was replaced by a new one. The current bell tower with the onion helmet was built in 1831 according to the plans of the monastery and city architect Ignaz Decherbauer.

The simple chancel was redesigned around 1980. The monumental wooden statue in the middle window niche of the presbytery depicts Christ Salvator from 1498. The baroque pulpit - with access via the former sacristy - was built around 1720. The glass windows are based on a design by the Weidling artist Amadeus Dier (1956). The organ was built by the Passau organ building company Eisenbarth and handed over to its intended use at Whitsun 1999.
