Journal of Roman Archeology

The Journal of Roman Archeology (abbreviation: JRA ) is a journal of classical archeology that has been published annually since 1988 and has been published by Cambridge University Press since 2020 .

The journal publishes articles that cover the archeology of Rome , Italy and the Roman Empire in all its breadth. In particular, topics from the neighboring disciplines of archeology are included as soon as archaeological interests are touched upon. This also includes articles on historical topics or questions. Works that deal with the prehistory of Italy are explicitly excluded ; in return, Etruscan themes are included. The period from the 7th century BC is used here. BC to the 7th century AD.

All articles are peer reviewed before being accepted . The aim is to promote significant contributions to understanding and new approaches in the archaeological exploration of the Roman world and to initiate discussions in this regard. Results of archaeological surveys and excavations are also included in the journal. Reviews of new scientific publications are also given a lot of space . They form their own volume ( Reviews Fascicule ), which reaches around 400 pages per year with a review length of 3–12 pages and thus makes up about half of a year.

The Journal of Roman Archeology has been published annually since 1988. Founder and longtime editor was the archaeologist John H. Humphrey , former professor in Ann Arbor and excavator among others in Carthage , who for his achievements in the field of Roman archeology, in particular the founding of the Journal, which received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America in 2010 . In 2020, Humphrey was replaced by Jennifer Trimble (Stanford University). Entries are accepted in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish; however, the predominant language is English. The ISSN is 1047-7594.

In addition to the journal, the monographic series JRA Supplements is published, the 100th volume of which was published in 2015.
