John H. Humphrey
John H. Humphrey (* 1948 ) is an American classical archaeologist .
John Humphrey first studied at the University of Cambridge , where he received his bachelor's and master 's degrees . He then studied at Bryn Mawr College , where he received his doctorate in 1975 with a thesis on the Roman circus . From 1974 to 1994 he taught Classical Archeology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . For many years he led excavations in ancient Carthage for the university . From 1990 to 1995 he led excavations in Leptis Minor .
In 1988 he founded the Journal of Roman Archeology , which he developed into the leading specialist journal in this field, and is still published today. In 2010 he received the gold medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for his achievements in the field of Roman archeology, in particular the founding of the magazine .
