The Journal von und für Deutschland was a German magazine and appeared monthly in the late Enlightenment period from January 1784 to December 1792. It was aimed at scholars and offered them a forum for information and discussion of very wide-ranging contemporary topics.

content

As the first publisher explains in his preliminary report of May 8, 1783, the English Gentleman's Magazine was the model for the journal. Then he wants to summarize in it news for the entire Holy Roman Empire about grain prices, meteorological data, promotions of officials and bankruptcies. In addition, he wants prizes from governments, academies and the like. a. and publish announcements of prenumerations or subscriptions . Furthermore, the contents of the most distinguished German journals as well as events in Germany should be communicated. The main purpose, however, is to convey news about contemporary people of some importance. But also short descriptions of antiquities, manuscripts, very rare books, paintings , etc. should be included as well as small travelogues. Finally general inquiries and the answers to them should be published. The news is said to be provided by correspondents who were based in many cities in the empire.

We expressly refrain from including reviews of scientific or literary works, since there are already enough organs for this. The magazine is therefore not a literary magazine .

With regard to political news, the paper had to reckon with censorship and therefore published only a few of it. The editor Bibra makes a very clear statement about this at the beginning of the 1786 year:

“Another reason why I hide some news is the political intolerance of our decade, which increases to the same extent as tolerance in religious opinions grows. The divinity of Jesus can be doubted with impunity; but to deny the Cabinette of many a little Sultanah's infallibility would be high treason. Freedom of the press in our Germany is still a very relative term ... "

The censorship may also be a reason for the discontinuation of the Journal 1792. In any case, Bibra remarks at the beginning of the 12th piece:

"Since I have received many inquiries from and for Germany in consideration of the journal, I hereby announce that I will continue this after a changed plan in some time."
