biography

society

Ignacio Basaguren is of Basque descent. He began his career with the Basque club Centro Vasco in the Liga Española de Fútbol de México , an amateur league of Mexico City and the surrounding area. From there he made the leap into the Mexican professional league , where he (verifiably at least between 1967 and 1973) played for CF Atlante , who was then still in the capital , and developed into a real symbol of this club.

National team

Basaguren made his debut in the Mexican national team in a friendly against Chile (3-1), which was played on August 27, 1968.

The highlight of his national team career was his participation in the 1970 World Cup , which was held in his own country , in which he was used in two preliminary round matches. First he was substituted on in the 76th minute of the game against El Salvador and scored the goal after just seven minutes to make it 4-0, making Basaguren the first substitute at a World Cup to score. In the next group game against Belgium (1-0) he replaced striker Javier Valdivia in the 53rd minute. It was also his last international match.
