Juan Levy (* 1932 in Duisburg ) is a German pianist, conductor and music writer.

Live and act

Juan Levy is the son of Jewish parents. His father, Erich Levy, director of the Tietz department stores, decided to emigrate to Guatemala in 1935 in order to keep his family safe from the threat of National Socialism .

Juan Levy played the piano from the age of 5. After completing school in Guatemala, he completed a music degree at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, USA. With a Bachelor of Music and a concert exam in Jack Radunsky's piano class, Levy came to Europe in 1959 for further studies and courses with Rosl Schmid and Edwin Fischer . He then took over the management of the feature pages of the newspaper "El Imparcial" in Guatemala.

Since 1972 Levy has led piano classes in the music education department at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . He made his debut as orchestral conductor in 1976 with the national symphony orchestra in Guatemala. Further engagements in Latin America followed.

In 1984 Levy founded the Pro Arte Ensemble Mainz , in which musicians from West German symphony orchestras came together several times a year for concerts and studio productions under his direction.

Based on the thoughts of the American philosopher Susanne K. Langer (1895–1985) - especially her book "Philosophy in a new key", which describes musical art as a central element in human life - Juan Levy reflected on the essence of music for decades. From his preoccupation with the question of the importance of musical communication, Levy developed his concept of the interpretation of musical works, which should be the basis of his special understanding of music.

Juan Levy lives with his wife, the music pedagogue and flutist Alice Levy-Janicaud, in Wiesbaden.
