Juan Urteaga Loidi

Juan Urteaga Loidi (born January 28, 1914 in Valmaseda , † January 2, 1990 in San Sebastián ) was a Spanish organist, choir director, music teacher and composer.

Urteaga was a choirboy at San Vicente in San Sebastián, where his father Luis Orteaga was organist. From 1928 he studied at the Conservatory of San Sebastián, and in 1934 he became an organ student of Marcel Dupré in Paris. After his return to San Sebastián in 1940 he became organist at the Santa María Church . In the same year he founded the Schola Cantorum de Nuestra Señora del Coro and took over the management of the Coro Easo .

In 1955 he went to the Dominican Republic and took over the management of the Conservatory of Santo Domingo. Ten years later he became choirmaster and organist in the parish of San Juan de Luz in the French Basque Country. In 1971 he returned to San Sebastián and worked there until 1977 as director of the Donisti-Ereski choir . As a composer Urteaga stood out primarily with choral works, besides he also composed some piano works, songs and film music.
