Juan de Homedes
Juan de Homedes y Coscón (also Jean , * 1477; † September 6, 1553 ) was a Spanish nobleman and from 1536 until his death the 47th Grand Master of the Order of Malta .
He came from the Aragonese tongue of the order. During his reign, the order built considerable fortifications on the island of Malta , which was given to the order by Emperor Charles V in 1530 , in order to be able to withstand an expected renewed attack by the Ottoman Empire , which had driven the order from Rhodes in 1522 .
However, in 1551 the order lost its North African possession of Tripoli to a Turkish invasion force under the corsair and Admiral Turgut Reis and the Ottoman Admiral Sinan Pascha . Homedes blamed the military governor of Tripoli, Gaspard de Vallier, and had him forfeited his knighthood and incarcerated him. De Vallier was rehabilitated years later by Grand Master Jean de la Valette .
