Juegos Florales de Chile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Juegos Florales de Chile is a spring festival that was organized annually at the beginning of the 20th century by the student organization of the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile . Cultural competitions were held. The most famous competition was that of the poets and writers of Chile. In 1914 Gabriela Mistral won the competition with " Sonetos de la muerte " and in 1921 Pablo Neruda with " Canción de la fiesta ".

Similar games were celebrated in the Roman Empire from April 28th to May 4th. In Rome they had a religious background. They were called Floralia or Ludi Florensei and were dedicated to the goddess Flora . A more recent parallel can be found in the Jocs Florals , a poetry contest held in Catalonia in the 19th century .
