Youth center St. Kilian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Kilian Youth Center has been a youth education and conference center in the Diocese of Würzburg since 1983 . It is located in the Lower Franconian district town of Miltenberg in the triangle of Bavaria , Hesse and Baden-Württemberg directly on the Main .

History of the house

Between 1872 and 1904 the buildings Haus Totnan and Villa Anna (today Villa Kolonat) were built on the site of today's youth center. In the years that followed, today's main building, Sankt Kilian, was added. Over the next few decades, the owners changed regularly, until in 1927 the Bishop's Ordinariate of Würzburg bought the site from the city of Miltenberg in order to set up an episcopal boys' seminary for priestly professions. On April 19, 1927, the Kilianeum was inaugurated and given its new purpose. The operation of the seminar started with 100 Kilianists.

By order of the city of Miltenberg, the Kilianeum was closed at the end of March 1939. The building has now been converted into a state school home. During the Second World War , the student dormitory building was converted into a reserve hospital. The chapel room became an operating theater, the dormitories and the theater room served as sick beds for wounded soldiers. On March 31, 1945, American troops occupied Miltenberg. The reserve hospital was lifted. The home building temporarily served as accommodation for American troops. Negotiations with the military government and local politicians were able to restore the Kilianeum to its old purpose in January 1946. In the following years the number of pupils grew steadily. Many young men left the Kilianeum as high school graduates and took the path of the priestly profession.

In 1982 the diocese management made the decision to dissolve the Kilianeum as a boys' seminar and convert the building into a youth education and conference center. On August 1, 1983, the St. Kilian Youth Center was officially opened. From the beginning, the regional office for church youth work and the diocesan office had their offices in the house. Over and over again the house was modernized in the following years and converted according to the current demands of an accommodation facility.

The youth center today

In parallel to the conference, a second business pillar developed for the St. Kilian youth center with external lunch. The large kitchen not only cooks for house guests, but also for children, adolescents and young adults from kindergartens, schools and social institutions in the region.

Between 2012 and 2014 the house of St. Totnan was completely renovated and since then it has housed the diocesan office, the marriage and family pastoral care of the Miltenberg and Obernburg deans, the regional office for church youth work and the youth center's education department.
