Jules Settelen

Jules Settelen , actually Julius Settelen (* 1857 in Basel ; † July 31, 1907 there ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician .

Settelen grew up in Basel and first learned the tailoring trade in his father's shop. In 1883 he bought the bankrupt tram bus business from Heinrich Imhoff at the judicial Gant . He then gave up the tailoring trade and from then on devoted himself to the carriage business ; He steadily expanded this business. In 1892, Settelen and his brother Ernst bought the Basel cab company , making them the city's most important trucker.

At the end of the 1880s, Settelen began to get involved in politics as a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) . In 1889 he was elected a member of the commercial arbitration tribunal, and in 1897 a substitute judge at the civil court . From 1899 to 1907 he also sat for the FDP in the Basel city parliament, the Grand Council . In the party, Settelen held the office of party treasurer for years.

Settelen died in 1907 shortly before his 50th birthday. His cab company was then known for a long time as the cab company Settelen and in 1997 it was converted into a stock corporation (today's Settelen AG ).
