Julius Elias, 1st Viscount Southwood

Julius Salter Elias, 1st Viscount Southwood (born January 5, 1873 in Birmingham , † April 10, 1946 in Highgate , London ) was a British newspaper owner and politician ( Labor Party ).

Life and activity

Elias was the youngest of seven children of David Elias. He left school at the age of thirteen to work as a subordinate for the Oldham Bros company, which at the time was still a small printing company.

In the following years Elias worked his way up step by step - parallel to the rapid growth of this company - at Oldham Bros, where he finally reached the position of managing director and chairman of the board. When Oldham Bros. merged with John Bull under the name Oldham Press to form the largest British newspaper and printing company in 1920, he retained this position.

In 1937 Elias was raised to the nobility as Baron Southwood, of Fernhurst, in the Country of Sussex. This included membership in the House of Lords .

In 1944 Elias was appointed chief whip of the Labor Party in the House of Lords. He held this position until 1945.

In January 1946, Elias was promoted from Baron to Viscount Southwood, of Fernhurst in the County of Sussex.

Southwood married Alice Louise Collard in 1906. The marriage remained without children, so that his title of nobility expired with his death.
