history

Juliet Anammah, Chair of Jumia Nigeria

Jumia was founded in 2012 by the two former management consultants Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec. In March 2016, the company managed to raise 50 million euros in venture capital . Investors included Rocket Internet (until early 2020), Goldman Sachs , Axa and Millicom , among others .

The technology startup was the first “unicorn in Africa” to achieve a valuation of over 1 billion US dollars. In April 2019, the stock market debut took place on the New York Stock Exchange , whereby capital of 196 million US dollars could be raised. Jumia's share price tripled within the first three trading days before settling back around the cost price a month later. The assertion by the US portal Citron Research that Jumia reported incorrect key figures before the IPO had negative effects on the share price .

Jumia pays its taxes in Berlin , the development team is based in Portugal and the headquarters are in Dubai . These reasons, and because the nationality of the two CEOs is French, are used by critics as arguments that the company is not, as stated in the self-presentation, purely African (“100% Africa”).
