Jupe (clothes)
Der, die or das Jupe is a foreign word taken over from French in German ( pronunciation : [ ʒyp ]) (of Arabic origin) for skirt and in the 18th and 19th centuries denotes the skirt that is worn under a robe , in contrast to Dress skirt (lower part of a one-piece dress) and to the petticoat (underclothing). A complete suit of a woman of the 18th century consists of the jupe, the plug inserted over the cord and the robe ( manteau ) worn over it like a coat - or a jupe and jacket .
The word Jupe usually carries the masculine article ( der , more rarely that or the Jupe) and has the same origin as German Joppe .
In Switzerland (i. Ggs. Zu Germany) Jupe refers to a piece of clothing from the waist down (half skirt), while skirt refers to a one-piece dress.
Baby clothes include the Jüpchen , a jacket that is tied around the body and usually worn under the romper suit.
