Yury Vynnychuk
Jurij Pawlowytsch Vynnytschuk ( Ukrainian Ю́рій Па́влович Винничу́к ; born March 8, 1952 in Stanislaw ) is a Ukrainian writer, linguist and journalist.
Life
Vynnychuk studied from 1969 to 1973 at the philological faculty of the Ivano-Frankivsk Pedagogical University , after which he worked as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature. In 1974 he moved to Lemberg , where he initially worked as a porter and painter.
From 1987 to 1991 he was director of the Lviv variety theater “Don't worry!”. In 1990 he became the owner of the theater with Stefko Obrobetz and formed the “Cabaret Jurij und Stefcio”. From 1998 to 1999 he edited the department for mysticism and sensation of the daily newspaper “Post-postup” (post-progress). 1995 to 1998 he headed the newspaper "Gulwisa" (bon vivant). From 1998 to 1999 and since 2006 he has worked as a journalist for the newspaper “Postup” (progress). Since 1997 he has been a member and since 2004 deputy chairman of the Association of Ukrainian Writers.
His works have been translated in Germany , the United Kingdom , France , Argentina , Belarus , Canada , Poland and the United States . He translated works from English, Slavic and Celtic languages.
He made his debut with the poetry book Відображення (performance, 1990). Vynnychuk created the novel Ласкаво просимо в Щуроград (Welcome to Rat City, 1992). The book Легенди Львова (Lviv Legends, 1993-2003) reached 6 editions. The book Кнайпи Львова (Lemberger Kneipen, 2000) was also published in Polish in 2008. The books Весняні ігри в осінніх садах (Spring Games in Autumn Gardens, 2005) and Танґо смерті (Death Tango, in German translation Im Schatten der Mohnblüte , 2012) were awarded the Ukrainian BBC Prize. His most recent historical novel, Аптекар (The Pharmacist), published in 2015, is set in Venice and Lviv from 1646–1648. He also wrote the tragicomic one-act play Останній Бункер (The Last Bunker). In January 2012, he was heavily attacked for the poem Убий підараса (Kill the villain). In the same month he was accused by Communist MP Leonid Hrach for participating in the Kiev Night of Erotic Poetry and Pornography.
Vynnychuk also used the pen name Riangabar , a fictional Irish poet from the 13th century.
