The Arezzo Palace of Justice is located within a historical park in the immediate vicinity of a Medici castle designed by Antonio da Sangallo . It consists of a neoclassical old building, a former hospital building and the new wing, which was designed by the Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti and completed in 2008.

The old building

The older part of the complex consists of the premises of the former Sanatorio Antonio Garbasso , which has recently been renovated. It contains courtrooms, offices, archive rooms and the library. It is connected to the new building by a glazed bridge.

The new Building

The new courthouse was designed by Manfredi Nicoletti. On the inside it contains a garage, archives, a large hall, two large double-height courtrooms, offices and the newsroom as well as the associated operations.

The planimetric installation is based on an ellipse which is a section of a cone with an oblique tip in relation to the vertical axis of the building. The granite north wall follows the curve of the cone, but its outer casing is made of panels of identical dimensions. The south wall is made up of two undulating surfaces made up of simple elements, straight pillars made of steel. These pillars have different inclinations and they carry straight steel fasteners.

Architecturally, the project of the new building represents two basic principles of bioclimatic architecture: passive cooling and passive heating. The compositional selection is directed towards a more protected north facade and a more open south facade in order to enable better climatic regulation and therefore a reduction in energy costs.
