Jyrki "Muddy" Manninen (born November 14, 1957 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish guitarist. From 2004 to 2017 he was guitarist for the band Wishbone Ash and during this time he was involved in three studio albums.

Life

At the age of 10, the Finnish guitarist Jyrki “Muddy” Manninen bought his first own acoustic guitar while on vacation in Copenhagen. But since the playing did not go as well as he had imagined at first, this guitar ended up in the corner very quickly. In 1969 the time had come: he got his first real western guitar and immediately began to take lessons. He also started taking courses at the Helsinki University of Music, which also introduced him to the world of music theory. This phase lasts about two years. When he got his first electric guitar (a copy of Ibanez Les-Paul), he and school friends started to form his first bands such as "Diesel Band" and "Safe as Milk" (named after a Captain Beefheart album). With his next band - the "Red House Blues Band" - he recorded his first single for the Finnish record company "Love Records" in 1979 before it went bankrupt.

Muddy moved to Sweden for a while and when he came back he joined Pave Maijanen's band “Mistakes” with whom he recorded two albums (“Mistakes” and “Pidä Huolta”). In 1983 he went to Amsterdam for a while. When he returned to Helsinki in 1985, he formed the band “Havana Blacks” with whom he recorded the single “Is It Fun”. With the founding of "Gringos Locos" and the release of the debut album of the same name in 1987, as well as the following albums "Punch Drunk" (1989) and "Raw Deal" (1991), he made a name for himself as a rock guitarist far beyond the Scandinavian borders . After the "Gringos" dissolved, Muddy worked as a session, tour and studio musician a. a. with Scandinavian greats like "Hector", "Pave Maijanen", "Edu Kettunen" and "Kim Lönnholm" together. He was also a member of the very successful 'Mestarit' touring band, which consisted of four of the most famous Scandinavian artists - Kirka, Pave Maijanen, Hector and Pepe Willberg. In 2004, on the recommendation of his gringos colleague Ben Granfelt , he became his successor at Wishbone Ash . Muddy was touring the world with this band until April 2017.
