K'inich Janaab Pakal II.
K'inich Janaab Pakal II was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque who ruled around the year 742. Before his accession to the throne, he was called Upakal K'inich .
Origin and family
His family connection to his predecessor K'inich Ahkal Mo 'Nahb III. (* 678; † after 736) was unclear for a long time, and it was assumed that he was his son. Reliefs from Temple XIX in Palenque, which were discovered in 2002, rather suggest that he was his brother. The reliefs show K'inich Janaab Pakal I (* 603; † 683), the most important ruler of Palenques, at a blood sacrifice . He is accompanied by K'inich Ahkal Mo 'Nahb III. and K'inich Janaab Pakal II, who are referred to here by their childhood names. Since K'inich Ahkal Mo 'Nahb III. can be identified with certainty as the grandson of K'inich Janaab Pakal I and was barely five years old when his grandfather died, it can be assumed that a ceremony is depicted here that K'inich Janaab Pakal I carried out during his last years in reign In the presence of his grandchildren, who were still children. The family relationship between K'inich Janaab Pakal II and his successor in office K'inich Kan Bahlam III. is unknown.
Reign
After his accession to the throne, Upakal K'inich took his grandfather's name and reigned as K'inich Janaab Pakal II. To distinguish it from his grandfather, however, he combined his birth name and his throne name on inscriptions. Events from his reign are hardly known. The only inscription that mentions a date from his reign comes from Temple XIX in Palenque. It describes the installation of a dignitary in an office on January 29, 742 ( long count 9.15.10.10.13, calendar round 8 Ben 16 Kumk'u) K'inich Janaab Pakal II is also evidenced by a portrait that comes from the palace of Palenque comes from, and possibly another, of as yet undetermined origin.
During his reign, the lady Chak Nik Ye 'Xook was married to Copán , where she gave birth to the future ruler of this city, Yax Pasaj Chan Yopaat .
