Kärkna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kärkna (German Falkenau ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Tartu in the Estonian district of Tartu . It has 218 inhabitants.

Kärkna lies on the lower reaches of the Amme river ( Amme jõgi ). Nearby the river flows into the Emajõgi (German Embach ). In pre-Christian times there was already an important trade route from Tartu to Põltsamaa . Kärkna was founded in the 13th century as a monastery under the name Vanamõisa (German Wannamoise ). It only got its current name at the beginning of the 17th century after the mayor of Tartu Berendt von Gerten.

In the 1220s, shortly after Estonia was Christianized , the Cistercians founded the Kärkna monastery . It was one of the largest monasteries in Livonia . The monastery was largely destroyed by Russian troops in 1558/59. The ruins were gradually removed and used as building material for the city of Tartu, especially in the 18th century. The remains of the foundation and the ramparts are still partially preserved.
