Emajõgi (translated: "mother river", German name: Embach ; Russian Эмайыги ) is the longest river in Estonia .
It begins as Väike Emajõgi (Little Embach) on Pühajärv near the winter sports resort Otepää and is fed by various streams in Tartu and Võru County . Among other things, it is reinforced by the Pedeli River ( paddle , largest tributary) and, after the Purtsi jõgi finally joins it, flows into the Võrtsjärv ( Wirzsee ), from which it emerges as (Suur) Emajõgi (Eng .: Great Embach ).
It flows through the city of Tartu , is navigable from here on even for larger ships and flows into the Peipus Sea from which the Narva emerges in the north as a border river between Estonia and Russia and flows into the Baltic Sea after approx. 60 km .
The Emajõgi is very rich in fish. Among its tributaries, the Wassula ( Visula ?) And the Elva ( Elwa or Ullila ) should be emphasized. The length of the river, including its course through Võrtsjärv, is 260 kilometers.
The Warbeck Bishop's Castle is nearby .
