The König-Fahd-Talsperre (Talsperre King Fahd; Arabic سد الملك فهد بن عبد العزيز, DMG Sadd al-Malik Fahd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ) is located in Wadi Bischa in Asir Province , Saudi Arabia . It is named after the Saudi king Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz . The city of Bischa is about 40 km north of the dam. After the Baysh Dam, it is the second highest dam in Saudi Arabia.

The project to build the dam began in 1986 (1407 according to the Islamic calendar ). The construction was completed in 1997 (1418). In addition to flood protection, the dam is also used for irrigation, drinking water supply and filling a groundwater reservoir. It is owned by the Ministry of Water and Electricity (MOWE) and is also operated by MOWE.

The dam was officially inaugurated on May 10, 1998 by the then Crown Prince Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 103 m above the foundation level (68 m above the river bed). The length of the building crown is 507 m and its width 8 m. The dam is 80 m wide at the base. The volume of the dam is 1.4 million m³. 1,560 t of cement were required for the sealing curtain.

There are six inspection corridors with a total length of 3,280 m in the dam , which are used for monitoring (e.g. with regard to horizontal or vertical movement of the dam). The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 5,338 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.

Reservoir

The reservoir can store up to 325 million m³ of water; this makes it the largest reservoir in terms of volume in Saudi Arabia. The length of the reservoir reaches up to 18 km. The catchment area of the wadi up to the dam is approximately 7,600 km².

A system for drinking water treatment can process up to 40,000 m³ of water per day.

Others

The total cost of the project was SAR 246 million ( $ 65.6 million ). The dam is shown on a 1998 postage stamp.
