History and description

Houses on Junghansstrasse

The group of houses with 124 apartments was designed by the architect Theodor Richter and was the first project of the Dresden Small Housing Association founded in 1910 . The cooperative acquired the building site along Junghansstrasse between Kipsdorferstrasse and Glashütter Strasse from one of its founding members.

The facility consists of three three-storey blocks with a mansard floor, which are arranged across Junghansstrasse between Glashütter and Kipsdorfer Strasse. The three buildings are connected by a crossbar on their west side, so that they form two large open courtyards on Junghansstrasse. Particularly noticeable is a high stepped gable facing Junghansstrasse, but also the facade decorations above the entrance areas in Glashütter Strasse. “A three-dimensional effect is achieved through numerous projections and recesses.” The lavishly constructed roofs are loosened up by gable fronts or chimneys connected to form a gate.

Between the blocks leading to Junghansstrasse there were two single-storey gatehouses in the entrances to the two courtyards, but these were demolished around 1970.

The buildings are in the immediate vicinity of the W. Lande cigarette factory and the Dresden Technical Collections .
