The King Ludwig Monument in Kempten (Allgäu) consists of a small temple-like structure with the bronze bust of King Ludwig II of Bavaria . The monument, unveiled in 1933, is located on the right-hand side above the Iller near the König-Ludwig-Brücke in a small green area.

history

The King Ludwig Monument was the first monument to the king to be unveiled after the end of the Bavarian monarchy in 1933. The plans go back to the year 1908, when the "Association for Kempten and the Allgäu for the erection of a monument to Weiland King Ludwig II of Bavaria eV" was founded. The First World War and high inflation delayed the realization of the memorial.

On the 40th anniversary of the king's death in 1926, the plans were actively resumed, and in 1932 construction of the temple-like structure began. On July 16, 1933, the bronze bust was unveiled under the protectorate of Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria with a speech influenced by the National Socialists . The heroic bust of the king on the marble plinth comes from the Grönenbach sculptor Ludwig Eberle .
