history

On May 1, 1905, the Hufengymnasium was officially opened in a rented building in Hermann-Allee No. 8 (at the Hufenschlucht gorge near the zoo). Commissioned with the establishment of the Royal Hufengymnasium zu Königsberg Pr. And head of the same was Prof. Otto Portzehl . In 1915 it moved to the school building on Tiergartenstrasse (today Zoologitscheskaja 2), which was built according to plans by government building officer Kraatz. This enabled the affiliation of a secondary school branch, i.e. H. the expansion of the school into a double institution. With 750 students (as of 1926), including 670 Protestant, 30 Catholic and 48 Jewish faith, it was one of the larger schools in the city. The most famous teacher was Ernst Wiechert , who taught German and English from 1920 to 1930. On January 23, 1945 the school was closed. The building, which was severely damaged in the air raids on Königsberg , was largely restored and opened as the Kaliningrad Building School on September 1, 1958 .

There is a memorial stone for Ernst Wiechert next to the portal. The inscription is written in Russian and German:

POET ERNST WIECHERT 18 MAY 1887 - 24 AUGUST 1950 TEACHER AT THE HUFEN-GYMNASIUM (1911–1930). MY SONG STILL SOUNDS
