Königsberg Treaty (1384)

The Königsberg Treaty was an agreement between the Lithuanian Prince Vytautas and the Teutonic Order of January 30, 1384 in Königsberg . The main content was the transfer of Samogitia to the order and the recognition of the order's suzerainty over Lithuania. For this he assured military support for Vytautas in the fight against his cousin and Grand Duke Jogaila .

Samogitia was of great importance for the Teutonic Order as a link between the land of the order and the land of the associated Livonian order .

The transfer of Samogitia could not be implemented at this time, however, because Vytautas had no power to do so. But it formed the basis for the Treaty of Salinwerder of 1398 between the two sides.

In 1382 Jogaila had promised the order in the Treaty of Dubysa Samogitia to the Dubysa River , but did not implement the agreement. Vytautas now promised a border to the Nevėžis River and the area around Kaunas .

Various regions of Samogiti declared their consent to the treaty in February 1384. On July 16, Vytautas repeated his promises in Neu-Marienburg. In the same month, however, he destroyed Neu-Marienburg and Georgenburg and took the castellan of Neu-Marienburg Markward von Salzbach prisoner. On November 6th he conquered Neu-Marienwerder with Jogaila and destroyed it.

On January 19, 1390 Vytautas and the order concluded the Treaty of Lyck, with the same content as in Königsberg. In 1392, however, Vytautas made the Ostrowo Agreement with Jogaila , and again destroyed castles of the order.

In 1398 the Treaty of Salinwerder was concluded between Grand Duke Vytautas and the order , and in 1404 the Treaty of Raciąż, both times with a content from Königsberg.

The Lithuanian historian Danilevičius and the Polish historian Konecny ​​have doubts about the authenticity of the contract and believe that forgery by the Teutonic Order is possible.
