Dornstädter Altar, dated 1417 Württemberg State Museum, Stuttgart

The master of the Dornstädter Altar is a Gothic carver who was active in southwest Germany at the beginning of the 15th century.

The artist , who is not known by name, is named after the shrine of the Dornstädter Altar that he created around 1420 , the oldest preserved carved altar from Swabia. The altar is now in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart. The shrine shows Mary between Saints Barbara and Catherine . The figures are assigned to the beautiful style , the style that dominated late Gothic sculpture around 1400 in the whole of western Europe. The Madonna figure on the Dornstadt Altar also shows its typical depiction of flowing clothes and gentle faces.

The figures on the Dornstädter Altar show a resemblance to some stone figures in the west facade of the Ulm Minster ; Therefore it was suggested that the master of the Dornstädter Altar could be identical to Master Hartmann , who created these figures and who ran his own workshop in Ulm around 1420.

A few other figures are assigned to the master of the Dornstädter Altar , such as a protective coat Madonna in the art collection Lorenzkapelle of the city of Rottweil .
