Master Hartmann is a German carver and sculptor who worked in Ulm and was one of the earliest representatives of the Ulm School . Its origin has not yet been proven and its further life data are unknown. The creation of his works is dated to around 1420 and they are the first works of art from the early days of Ulm sculpture. His work differs from the other sculptors of the first Ulm Minster Building. In 1428 he was granted citizenship in Ulm. Wortmann therefore suspects that he has resigned from the hut association of the Ulmer Münsterbauhütte and has set up his own proper workshop .

Works

  • around 1420: Madonna (made of stone), originally for the central pillar of the western entrance portal to the Ulm Minster , today positioned on the right free pillar , the original is in the Neidhart Chapel of the minster.
  • around 1420: Mary with the child (made of wood, colored) in Orsenhausen . A naked baby Jesus is placed in the arms of the Madonna and shows certain love handles.
  • around 1420: Madonna in protective cloak (made of oak) in Ummendorf (near Biberach)
  • between 1419 and 1430: Six elector figures (sandstone) on the south windows of the Ulm town hall
  • between 1420 and 1421: Master Hartmann receives payments for 19 figures in the Ulm Minster arranged on the vestibule arches. Master Hartmann is thus the first creator of building sculptures on the cathedral that are associated with a name.

The wood-carved figures of the Dornstädter Altar , today in the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart, show a resemblance to the stone figures of Master Hartmann, therefore it is assumed that Master Hartmann could be identical with the master of the Dornstädter Altar .

classification

Master Hartmann represents the soft style in Ulm art . A short time later, Hans Multscher broke with this style of the early 15th century and developed his own.
